1870 - Texas is readmitted to the Union following Reconstruction.
1870 - The 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution was formally adopted, granting African American men the right to vote.
1912 - Sultan Abdelhafid signed the Treaty of Fez, making Morocco a French protectorate.
1945 - World War II: Soviet forces invaded Austria and captured Vienna.
1964 - Astronaut John Glenn withdrew from the Ohio Senate race because of injuries suffered in a fall.
