Here are some historical events that took place on February 22:

1632 - Galileo's Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems was published. This work defended the Copernican system, which placed the Sun, rather than the Earth, at the center of the universe.

1819 - Spain ceded Florida to the United States via the Adams-Onís Treaty.

1879 - Frank Woolworth opened the first "five-and-dime" store in Utica, New York. This would lead to the creation of the F.W. Woolworth Company.

1924 - U.S. President Calvin Coolidge delivered the first presidential radio broadcast from the White House.

1974 - Samuel Byck attempted to hijack an airplane with the intention of crashing it into the White House and assassinating President Richard Nixon. The attempt was unsuccessful.

1980 - The "Miracle on Ice" occurred during the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. The United States ice hockey team, made up of amateur and collegiate players, defeated the heavily favored Soviet Union team in a stunning upset.

1997 - Scottish scientists announced they had cloned a sheep named Dolly, the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell.

2011 - An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale struck Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 185 people and injuring several thousand others.
