Historical Events January 7

Here are some historical events that happened on January 7:

1.  1610:  Galileo Galilei observed the four largest moons of Jupiter for the first time, now known as the Galilean moons: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto.

2.  1782:  The first American commercial bank, the Bank of North America, opened in Philadelphia.

3.  1927:  The Harlem Globetrotters, a famous exhibition basketball team, played their first game in Hinckley, Illinois.

4.  1959:  The United States recognized the new Cuban government led by Fidel Castro.

5.  1979:  Vietnamese forces captured Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, overthrowing the Khmer Rouge regime.

6.  1999:  The impeachment trial of U.S. President Bill Clinton began in the Senate.

7.  2009:  Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip, officially ending a three-week military campaign known as Operation Cast Lead.

8.  2015:  Two gunmen attacked the offices of the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in Paris, killing 12 people and injuring many others. The attack was a response to the magazine's publication of controversial cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad.
